Inter won 3-2, with Juve fullback Pierre Kalulu sent off in the first-half for two yellow cards. His second was for a foul on Bastoni, who clearly dived to win the foul. However, due to VAR only being able to intervene in Italy for a direct red card, referee Federico La Penna's decision stood.
As Kalulu was shown his red card, Bastoni was seen celebrating, which further angered the Juve bench.
Marotta, formerly Juve general manager, said this morning: "Our position is very simple: we've noticed that the media has taken a disproportionate stance on what happened. The player himself has been the subject of media pillorying that goes beyond what happen.
"We're talking about a 26-year-old player, with more than 300 appearances in Serie A, who has never been the protagonist of sensational events. He's an asset to the national team, and some are questioning his call-up; it's an unfair disservice. We're faced with a young player's mistake, but who hasn't made one?
"If we're talking about simulations, they've been discussed for fifty years: it's a common occurrence, not extraordinary, certainly deplorable and linked to concomitant factors such as Kalulu's arm and the immediate whistle."
Marotta also said: "He made a mistake, I admit it, but last year we lost the Scudetto by one point, and there was an acknowledged mistake in Inter-Roma, we didn't create controversy. This year, Inter intervened only once, after Napoli-Inter, in which a penalty was awarded. The penalty was later declared unfair. We need to reflect, from the referees to the clubs, to the players, and even the Federation."
