Adam Wharton, Morgan Gibbs-White, Lewis Hall, Luke Shaw and Jarrod Bowen are notable absentees alongside bigger names such as Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire

The squad has sparked controversy online as fans debate Tuchel’s choices. However, speaking in Friday’s press conference, he justified who he picked as he attempts to build the strongest squad possible.

"I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players.

"Teams win championships, it is as simple as that. What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team.”

Speaking further on his squad selection: "Either way, if we picked all those names, some other big five names would have been out and we would be talking about these names.

“It comes with the job. I like these kinds of decisions, even if it sometimes took weeks and sometimes, months to clarify the decisions. I think they bring clarity. At the end, they bring a certain edge that is necessary.”

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, Arsenal duo Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, and the experienced duo of John Stones and Jordan Henderson all made it into a squad that was always going to divide opinion.

Tuchel is set to face New Zealand and Costa Rica in warm-up matches after arriving in the USA next month as fans get their first look at the side.
