Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood believes Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike's red card is down to Alexander Isak's presence.

Ekitike has been rightly ridiculed for his red card in Liverpool's 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Southampton, in which he removed his shirt despite already being on a yellow card after scoring a late goal to help his side progress to the next round.

Ekitike will now miss Liverpool's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday, which will frustrate manager Arne Slot, who will have to rely on Isak.

It is Isak however who Sherwood thinks is the problem as he feels Ekitike is feeling the pressure especially he scored the opening goal against The Saints.

"Can you believe it? Can you believe it? He takes a second yellow card for that?" Sherwood told Sky Sports. "I'd be fuming if I was Arne Slot. What is he thinking? He must know the rule.

"I think it's the pressure of Isak being there, the noise around it. He's letting everyone know that I am here. We know he's done really well, he's a real threat.

"That's his fifth goal of the season. He can't do any more than he's doing. We all know your name!".

"There's absolutely no need to show that. Liverpool fans appreciate what he's doing. Now he's not going to play and whether Isak is ready to play or not. Ekitike has let himself down."

Ekitike has had an excellent start to life at Anfield, scoring five goals in eight games but after his antics he may be dropped by Slot after he has served his suspension. Isak will be Liverpool’s main striker going forward which does not ease the pressure weighing on the Frenchman.
