The Daily Mail says Palace and the striker are now discussing whether he should go under the knife to fix a knee problem in order to give himself as much time as possible to make France's World Cup squad.
Palace were up front with Milan over Mateta's injury, having sent across detailed medical reports during the negotiations.
In the end, after holding their own examination, Milan decided against pushing through the £30m deal.
Milan's club doctor Stefano Mazzoni checked on Mateta and later recommended surgery to clean up some inflammation in his knee.
