Carrick has emerged as the favourite to replace current caretaker Darren Fletcher for the rest of the season. The former midfielder is said to be announced later today ahead of this weekend’s clash with rivals Manchester City.
Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate and Travis Binnion will also be part of Carrick's backroom staff and will take charge of training on Wednesday in what is a quick turnaround.
Fletcher, meanwhile, reportedly turned down the chance to remain as part of the first team, as reported by journalist Ben Jacobs.
“Following discussions on Monday, it has been decided Darren Fletcher will return to his role as Under-18s coach. Jonny Evans will stay on with Michael Carrick as one of his assistants.
“Fletcher was offered the chance to stay on as part of the first-team staff but decided to return to the Under-18s.”
Fletcher oversaw a 2-2 draw with Burnley last Wednesday before a disappointing loss against Brighton which saw them knocked out of the FA Cup.
Carrick will now take over as he leads the side at Old Trafford this weekend in what will be a very tough first test against Manchester City, who are five places above them in the Premier League.
