Nunez is set to be involved for Liverpool in Sunday’s Community Shield this Sunday despite growing speculation about his future this week as reports constantly link him with a move to Al-Hilal who are interested in snapping him despite his failings with The Reds.
The Liverpool forward started just eight Premier League games for the club last season and was last in the starting line up just once. Now, with the signing of Hugo Ekitike and the impending signing of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, his departure is written on the wall.
Journalist David Ornstein reported on his future on Wednesday afternoon as Liverpool and Al-Hilal continue negotiations which have moved swiftly this week.
“Al Hilal reach agreement in principle with Liverpool to sign Darwin Nunez. €53m + adds in place verbally. #LFC striker indicating willingness to accept. Steps needed to finalise but would be huge recruit for #AlHilal.”
Having arrived in an £85M deal from Benfica three years ago, Liverpool will need and want to recoup a big chunk of that fee. However, the Uruguayan international scored just five Premier League goals last season and it is unlikely that Al-Hilal will want to up their price any further for a striker who consistently struggles to find the back of the net.
Liverpool are currently planning for Sunday’s Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley and after an impressive preseason where Nunez has scored multiple goals, the striker should be in the squad if his deal is not completed before this weekend.
