This will be the fifth consecutive season that these two European giants meet in the Champions League knockout stages and it is perhaps the toughest test for City who must rally their troops at the Etihad.

City must do the impossible

He was first asked where this test ranks on his list of comebacks and if there is belief in his side ahead of the clash.

“No idea. The last 16, no idea. In a football game many things can happen. First we have to try and win. I don't have a specific plan.

“After ten years if I have to explain to our player's belief we are trouble. I am pretty sure we will try. Some players are new, not the same group, but it is an incredible chance.

“You have to be mentally strong, it is more than 90 minutes. I am not concerned about chances we are going to make them. It is not easy, but we are here, it is a football game. We need to do a good game.

“We arrive there to try and score. Perfect game in many ways. We have to try and try, and always we can create chances. We know each other. We need to be clinical and defend well.”

A much-needed rest for the squad

The biggest story ahead of the game was that Guardiola handed his players a day off ahead of the clash after a hectic schedule. This worked against Borussia Dortmund as City won 4-1 after a much-needed rest.

Guardiola explained his decision which may pay off once again.

“We train tomorrow for the game.

“We were in Madrid, late in the hotel, come back in the morning, no training, yesterday we come back at 2 or 3 in the morning. Today in the modern day, training doesn't improve a lot. I have done it two or three times this season. Before Dortmund, Fulham. Sometimes we train or stay at home. We know each other well we practice many things. I don't know (how beneficial it was).”
