Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina face each other at Cardiff City Stadium this week as the winners will face either Italy or Northern Ireland for a spot at the finals in Canada, Mexico and United States this summer.
Premier League icon Craig Bellamy will aim to lead his side to the world stage in what are two tough games for his side who sit 31st in the Fifa world rankings.
Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of the clash, Williams opened up on his place in the side where he feels like a leader at just 24 years old.
Asked whether the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are inspirations or a burden, Williams says he wants to become a Welsh icon.
"A bit of both. As kids, you watched the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Craig Bellamy. You grew up idolising them. You wanted to be like them.
"And now that they've retired, it's the new generation to come in. We're not a massive country, and we don't have loads and loads of players.
"But the way we are as a team and the togetherness, I think that's what drives us and gets us through.
"Where I used to see myself as a youngster, now I'm not that youngster any more. I'm more the senior player and I need to mentor these young lads coming through. We're a family."
Wales qualified for World Cup 2022 through play-off wins over Austria and will look to do so again over the coming week as they prepare to book their place in summer’s tournament.
