England boss Thomas Tuchel has explained why he signed a new contract until 2028.

The German's current deal was set to expire after the World Cup this summer, but he will remain manager regardless of England’s fate at the tournament across the US, Canada and Mexico.

Tuchel’s backroom staff Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne have also agreed extensions through to the end of Euro 2028 in what is a sign of faith from the FA.

Speaking on penning his new deal, Tuchel said he is over the moon to stick with the Three Lions.

“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity, and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.

“I have had so much support from Mark, all my colleagues at the FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job. EURO 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”

The move comes after the German was linked with Tottenham and Manchester United in what would have been a move set for after the World Cup.

However, he is now tied down in what is a smart move from the FA who wanted to ensure Tuchel stayed past Euro 2028 where England have a strong chance at going all the way.
