Benfica boss Jose Mourinho is set to be handed the Portugal job after the World Cup.

Mourinho returned to Portuguese powerhouse Benfica back in September as he stepped in for Bruno Lage at the Estadio Da Luz.

The 63-year-old has had a mixed start at Benfica, falling seven points behind Liga Portugal leaders FC Porto and being knocked out of both domestic cups over this season.

Mourinho oversaw just two wins from his opening five games in charge of Benfica and has not won Portuguese fans around just yet as he continues to struggle back in his home country.

However, ESPN reports that the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) are ready to offer him the Portugal role once the World Cup is over which would see him replace Roberto Martínez.

This comes after Mourinho explained that he would love to manage his home country last month, sparking reports about his future.

"I want to play a European Championship or a World Cup and unite a country around a team, as I have already done many times with the clubs," he said in an interview with Corriere Dello Sport. "I want to do it for football and what this sport represents. It will be incredible."

Reports state that the Portuguese club will go after former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim if Mourinho accepts the national team job in what would be a welcome return to Portugal.

Club president Rui Costa admitted at Mourinho's unveiling that there is an exit clause in the two-year deal in the former Real Madrid manager’s contract.

"There's a clause at the end of the season that leaves the club the option of continuing with the coach or not," Costa revealed.
