Romero returned to Argentina as part of pre-planned rehabilitation scheduled weeks ago for his knee injury suffered against Sunderland last month.
His agent Ciro Palermo told football.london that the defender’s commitment to the side has not changed, even if he planned to be on a different continent whilst the North London side fought against relegation.
"Cristian's focus is, and has always been, on recovering as strongly as possible, preparing for the World Cup, and supporting Tottenham Hotspur in every way he can. His commitment to the club, his team-mates and the supporters has been evident throughout his time at Tottenham and remains unchanged."
However, after major criticism from supporters and pundits alike, Romero looks to be back in London as per Tottenham expert Alasdair Gold.
“Cristian Romero is indeed back in London ahead of Tottenham's final match against Everton. Huge day ahead.”
Former England captain Stuart Pearce said the timing of the trip "stinks" and The Spurs Express, a Tottenham news and updates account with over 239,000 followers, described the situation bizarre as the club face their biggest game of the campaign.
“Inexplicable and frankly extraordinary that the club Captain of Tottenham Hotspur won’t be in attendance for one of the biggest games in the history of the Football Club.
“Dereliction of duty is an understatement.”
The defender posted a picture of himself getting a haircut in North London on Saturday morning, but fans were unsure if it was a snap from earlier in the season to promote his barber.
It now looks like he has returned to London, ready to support Spurs who need just a draw against the Toffees to survive dropping to the Championship this season.
