Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has praised and given an update on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, 41, is expected to be part of Portugal’s squad for this summer’s World Cup across the US, Mexico and Canada.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star will fight for his last chance at winning the World Cup under Martinez who will be reluctant to leave such a leader out of his starting eleven.

Ronaldo is currently out of action with a thigh injury, and although he missed the 0-0 draw with Mexico last week, he is expected to retain his spot in the side.

Martinez, who is a big admirer of the Al-Nassr forward, praised Ronaldo this week as he offered an injury update.

"Cristiano is our captain, a role model and a player with a real hunger. He's not just a 41-year-old player; he's a player who's hungry to improve every day.

“He's proving to be an exemplary captain and an inspiration to the younger players, someone who shows the way and embodies our values.

“And on the pitch, he's scored 25 goals in the last 30 games. We assess the players on a day-to-day basis, session by session, and the standards in the national team are the highest for everyone."

On injury concerns: "He has a minor injury and will probably be back playing and training next week. It's nothing serious. Cristiano is our captain; he's a very important player.”

With 143 goals in 226 appearances since his 2003 Portugal debut, Ronaldo will be desperate to win the World Cup in one of the few trophies to allude the Portuguese legend.
