Following the retirement of Neuer and injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, Baumann became Germany’s No.1 However, it is reported that Neuer is open to a return to the German national team for next summer’s World Cup if needed which means Baumann’s place in the side is under threat.
Speaking in an interview with Sport Bild, Baumann was unphased by this however as he heaped praise on to the Bundesliga legend who is still keeping clean sheets for Bayern at the age of 39.
"He might clash with one or two others, like Thibaut Courtois. But he definitely sets the standard; Manuel is one of the top three goalkeepers in the world," Baumann stated.
"We have a very good relationship. I really appreciate how he's remained so human and down-to-earth as a world-class goalkeeper. Manu is above it all, both personally and athletically."
Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann certainly has a big decision to make ahead of next year’s World Cup which could see Neuer return to the side to take Baumann’s place.
Neuer has played for Bayern since 2011, with current backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig expected to eventually succeed him as the club’s long-term number one in the next few years.
