Prior to joining AS Monaco on a free transfer over the summer months, the England international spent time with the Bundesliga champions where he recalls training ground drills in which Neuer greatly impressed him.
Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich earned a 2-1 victory over DFB Cup holders VfB Stuttgart in the Super Cup last week and Neuer was voted as the Franz Beckenbauer Super cup Man of the Match despite Harry Kane and Luis Diaz finding two stunning goals.
Dier reflected on the 39-year-old’s ability which he says is unmatched and he could not believe how consistent he was between the sticks as he worked tirelessly in training.
"It was an honour, honestly. I can’t even explain how good he was. You know the best part about him? He was 38 the and 39 now, and still unbelievable. After training, Dave and I would stay back for a game, just taking shots from the edge of the ‘D’. I’d take a touch inside, shoot, and there he was in goal, saving everything."
He continued as Ben Foster admitted that he would not have the same commitment as the German international who is often quoted as the best goalkeeper in history.
"We’d laugh about it, but it was serious too, I was genuinely in awe," he continued. "The first time I faced him feels like a long time ago now, but even then he was special. And I think people, especially in England, don’t fully understand just how good he really is.
“If you watched him week in, week out, even just for a season, you’d get it. I’ve not seen anything like it. And the funny thing is, everyone would always say to me: ‘Yeah, but he’s not the same as he used to be.’ But trust me, even then, he was on another level.
"The greatest of all time. I don't think people in England understand how good he is because maybe they haven't watched the Bundesliga. I've not seen anything like it"
Neuer retired from international duty following last year’s Euros, and Marc-André ter Stegen took over the No. 1 spot for the national team. However, he could bring his brilliance back to the side for the upcoming qualifiers as manager Jurgen Nagelsmann deals with Ter Stegen’s constant injuries.
