The World Cup winner says he is impressed by the young centre-forward's attitude, along with his quality and ability.
Altobelli told Tuttosport: "I really like Pio Esposito for the way he plays, his interpretation of the game, his movement in the penalty area, his desire and determination. He's a player I'm passionate about.
"So I hope he can do what he does for Inter with the national team."
On tonight's World Cup playoff with Northern Ireland, Altobelli also discussed Cagliari fullback Marco Palestra.
He continued: "Palestra will be coming into a difficult moment, in a World Cup play-off, and he'll have to prove his qualities.
"But I'm sure (Rino) Gattuso's faith will do him good. Usually, all strong players have good performances on their debut."
