Premier League legend Wayne Rooney has praised the FA Cup clash between Chelsea and Wrexham.

Premier League giants Chelsea needed extra-time to get past the Championship side, winning 4-2 at the Racecourse Ground in what was an intense clash.

The Championship side led during the fifth round tie, thanks to goals from Sam Smith and man of the match Callum Doyle as the Blues were pushed to their limits under manager Liam Rosenior.

Although Chelsea won in the end, Wrexham put on a show and Rooney was in high praise of the cup tie which he says is better than one particular clash in last year’s Champions League.

"Do you know what? I think it's the most I've enjoyed the game of football since I stopped playing," Rooney told BBC Sport.

"Just the atmosphere, the fans. We had to walk through the fans quite a bit to get the pitch out and stuff and the fans were great. It's probably the first time I've been to a stadium and not been given any stick as well, so... Yeah, that was nice, but not just the atmosphere, the game. I thought it was a really good game. Wrexham were excellent."

"My favourite game since I stopped playing was Barcelona Inter.  It was the semi-final last year and this one's took over. I really enjoyed it."

Rooney also has a special place in his heart for Wrexham as his first Everton goals came as a 16-year-old when he scored twice in a 3-0 win away to Wrexham in the League Cup back in October 2002.
