Rooney took charge of Derby County immediately after hanging up his boots and despite severe financial sanctions he managed to keep the side afloat before relegation followed the next season.
He has also had stints at MLS side D.C. United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle where he found little success.
The former striker was asked about stepping back into football and away from punditry this week, something he is open to if two of his former clubs make contact.
“I would go back if the right opportunity came up. I’m not in a rush.”
Would he be prepared to work as an assistant: “100% yeah. I got asked this a few weeks ago about whether I’d go back to United in a different role.
“Of course I would. Probably the only two clubs I’d go back to (not as a manager) are Everton and United because they’re the two clubs which are close to my heart.
“Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging for a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing.”
Rooney, who made 559 appearances for the club, scoring a club record of 253 goals would be welcomed back by fans who know the 40 year old has a deep knowledge of the game.
His former teammate Michael Carrick is loving life as the United interim and if he stays with the side permanently, Rooney may get a call to step back into his old club.
