Tottenham Hotspur have announced that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario will undergo surgery next week on a hernia.

In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the club confirmed the surgery which means the Italian international will be out for the clash against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

A club statement read: “We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario will undergo surgery next week on a hernia.

“The minor procedure for the Italy international goalkeeper has been timed to have as minimal impact on our season as possible.

“Guglielmo will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately, and it is hoped that he could return to action within the next month.”

This opens the door for backup goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to step back into the side after being ruthlessly pushed out the side by Igor Tudor last week after just 17 minutes in their defeat to Atletico Madrid

Vicario’s injury also means he will be unavailable for Italy's crucial World Cup playoff ties over the next fortnight as the national side prepare to face Northern Ireland.

Tottenham sit one point above the relegation zone and must beat Forest if they are to forge a path away from the drop zone.

After the clash Spurs do not have a match until they face Sunderland in the Premier League on April 12th where Vicario could potentially return.
