This marks the first time in the history of the prestigious award that the gala will take place on English soil on 26th October in what is a tribute to Stanley Matthews, who was the first ever winner of the Ballon d’Or in 1956.
A statement read: “By staging its 70th edition in the capital of England and the United Kingdom, the Ballon d’Or continues its expansion and further strengthens its status as a globally prestigious brand.
“As the European football season draws to a close, and with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, the question on everyone’s mind remains: who will succeed 2025 winners Aitana Bonmatí and Ousmane Dembele?”
Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal are the current favourites to win the male award but events such as the Champions League final and World Cup could heavily impact the standings ahead of the award ceremony.
Behind the pair are world-class players such as last year’s winner Dembele, Declan Rice, Michael Olise, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Kylian Mbappe who went trophyless with Real Madrid but still grabbed 43 goals in 47 appearances.
A definitive list of nominees for both the men’s and women’s award are yet to be announced, but should come when the Champions League winner has been announced.
