Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has backed Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres after his mixed start at Arsenal.

After having hit the back of the net 54 times for Sporting CP last term, Gyokeres has struggled to adapt to the Premier League so far. The Portuguese striker has bagged three goals in his first four games for the club but has gone goalless in the last 6 appearances.

The Swede has been included in his country’s squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Kosovo under manager Tomasson who backed the 27-year-old who has been bashed by supporters in recent weeks.

"Viktor Gyokeres is in very good form at the moment and is very good. If people say he doesn’t have an impact (on matches), then they don’t understand football and don’t have a clue about football.

“He creates space for other players, works on the ball and makes runs. It’s excellent and he scores goals almost all the time, so he has an impact and has been very good. It’s always nice, as you need time when you come to a new club.”

Gyokeres has started all but one game for Arsenal this season but has failed to live up to the expectations of the last two seasons where he scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting Lisbon.

Despite his critics, Gyokeres has led Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table and will soon help his side to the World Cup next year. Tomasson may be right that his critics are too quick to judge but if Gyokeres does not pick up more goals than more fans may start to turn on him.
