Former England captain Alan Shearer has weighed into the debate over Florian Wirtz's false start with Liverpool.

The £125m summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen has so far struggled to make an impact in a Reds shirt.

Pundit Shearer said, "The problem Wirtz has is that his best position is as a 'ten', I think. But Liverpool don’t play with one. That’s the thing.

"I understand the criticism of Wirtz, but through no fault of his own there will always be a microscope on him because of the price tag. He has to try to live up to that.

"There is no doubt that he is a very, very talented player, but it is about trying to get him into a system and team that worked so well last year and which is not really working so far this year because Liverpool have not played with a 'ten'. Liverpool are leaving themselves short in midfield to get Wirtz into the team.

"It's something to keep an eye on, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if (Arne) Slot returns to what worked for them last season."
