Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has spoken on summer signing Florian Wirtz, who has struggled so far.

The 22-year-old arrived at the Reds this summer in a then-club-record move from Bayer Leverkusen for £116M and is yet to live up to his hefty price tag after six Premier League appearances and zero goal contributions.

Wirtz scored 16 times and set up a further 15 for the Bundesliga side last season but has not found his feet in Merseyside under manager Arne Slot who is struggling to get the best out of him.

Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, Dalglish explained how the German international could start to get going with The Reds behind the scenes.

“The first thing he needs to do is what he's doing at the moment. He's great at taking the ball into the feet, he'll open himself up and the pass has beat you but he's still got control of it.

“Once he gets on the same wavelength with the others... by the way, that wee fella, he could open a can of soup. For me and Rushy, it was training where we learned. I told him, ‘If there’s a space, just leave it, I’ll play it and you go for it.’ Simple.”

Wirtz should feature against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon after another disappointing performance against Galatasaray in midweek. Slot, however, may drop the midfielder to the bench after his poor start in what would be a huge move from the Dutchman as he tries to bounce back from two straight losses.
