Former Manchester United and Everton striker Louis Saha has given his thoughts on Lisandro Martinez's red card against Leeds United.

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick branded Martínez’s red card for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair as “shocking” and suggested the club would appeal the decision.

Carrick said the action was “not aggressive” and the red card was “really concerning” as fans showed their fury on social media after the clash as they claimed football is changing for the worse.

After the game, Calvert-Lewin stated “I don't make the rules” as he could not defend the decision to send Martinez off in what was a controversial move.

Saha told BetVictor, who offer the latest World Cup betting, that the red card was unjust and should never have been given.

“I think that red card was a joke. There is supposed to be aggression in derby games, but there was a foul on Leny Yoro and the referee didn't blow, which then allowed the goal to be scored.

But with shirt pulling and contact, I think the game has become so soft. With VAR we still don’t have consistency from referees. I don't know, I don't understand.

“This game is getting absolutely ridiculous now with decision after decision that doesn't make sense. It gives us headaches after headaches.”

The loss against Leeds leaves United in third in the Premier League table, seven points behind sixth-placed Chelsea, who occupy a spot just beyond the automatic Champions League places.

Both Martinez and Harry Maguire are suspended for the Chelsea clash in what looks like a tough three points for Carrick’s side this weekend.
