Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has told manager Ruben Amorim that results must change unless he wants to feel the consequences.

United have their first point of the season, and their first goal after a 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday afternoon but they are 16th and are looking up at league rivals such as Manchester City and Liverpool who are used to looking down on The Red Devils in recent years.

Amorim has no excuses

Amorim has spent around £200M on new players over the summer transfer window so far, bringing in the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to try and bring goals back to a side who still look toothless going forward.

Amorim has accumulated just 28 points from 29 top-flight fixtures since succeeding Erik ten Hag last November and now Rooney, speaking on his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show has weighed in on the Portuguese manager who has failed to impress many supporters so far.

“There’s no excuses now for the manager this season. He’s got to start getting results and getting them quickly.

“Once you start getting into October or November, if results don’t change drastically that’s when the pressure comes.

“They needed to hit the ground running this season and one point from six is a bit of a worry.”

Rooney believes in Amorim

When asked if Amorim is the right man for the long-term, Rooney said he has full confidence in him and agrees that this summer’s signings have been impressive which is a positive sign.

“It’s difficult to sit here and say ‘Yeah 100 per cent’. I don’t think anyone could do that.

“I don’t think Ruben would probably say that himself with what we’ve seen since he’s been at the club.

“I think recruitment has been good in the summer – although I’d still like to see two or three more players.

“But it’s difficult to say this is going to be our manager for the next five years based on what we’ve seen.”

United were beaten 1-0 at home by Arsenal on the opening weekend of the new season and have now dropped points to Fulham. They next face newly promoted Burnley in the league where 3 points are imperative otherwise reports of a sacking may start to crop up.
