The Daily Mail says Aston Villa keeper Martinez was also being considered by United management.
However, they ultimately chose to pursue Lammens on Monday due to his youth and room for improvement.
Lammens, 23, has made just 64 appearances for Antwerp and has signed a contract until June 2030.
