Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has spoken to the press ahead of this weekend's clash with Brighton.

Last weekend's dramatic 2-1 loss to Manchester United spelled the end of Chelsea's unbeaten start to the Premier League season. Maresca will be hoping to bounce back against The Seagulls this Saturday in what should be another big test.

Palmer out

The headline of the press conference was the news that Cole Palmer will be out for a number of weeks as the club look to protect him whilst he recovers from injury.

"Yes, we decided to protect a little bit Cole. In terms of not letting his injury getting worse.

"We decided to rest him for two-three weeks until the international break to see if with that rest he can recover 100% and to be fit after the international break.

"I don't think he needs surgery but it is just to manage the pain in his groin. We have decided to be a little bit conservative with him.

“We said that with Cole we are a better team but we need to play games without Cole. We are going to play with 11 players, for sure, and we will find a different solution.

"(Facundo) Buonanotte can play in that position. But it depends a little bit on the game, the other team and how they defend. It depends.

Fernandez fatugue?

Next, the Italian head coach spoke on Enzo Fernandez and if he is feeling the affects of a harsh football calendar that may be affecting his stamina now the season is heating up.

"Enzo can play in different positions for us. He can play as a No.6, an attacking midfielder. We use him for 90% of our games as an attacking midfielder. He's very good in that position. The reason why he can have some good and bad moments is probably because of the amount of games.

"It's impossible to think you can play 64 games - that we played last season - at the same level. But we're happy with Enzo. It depends a little bit about what we think for the game-plan. He is an important player for us and we try to use him as much as we can."

On fatigue he also commented: "In this moment, for different reasons, we have problems. We have seven or eight players out. Is this a consequence of last season? I don't know."

Maresca is happy with Sanchez despite red card

Finally, Maresca opened up on the club's goalkeeper situation after Robert Sanchez picked up a reckless red card against Manchester United last week, meaning he is suspended for this weekend's clash.

"I think Robert for a long time was very good with us. The last part of last season, the beginning of this season, he was fantastic. He made a mistake and recognised that. We are happy with Robert and happy with Filip, both of them. Not any problem with Robert.

"It can happen (the red card). It's a quick decision. We conceded five goals because of Robert's mistakes last season but how many did we avoid because of Robert's saves?"
