Speaking at an Irish Independent Sport event in August, Adams urged Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to strip the Norway international of the Arsenal captaincy and hand the role to Declan Rice who he sees as more of a leader.
Rice as Arsenal's new captain?
“You’ve got someone in there who’s going to play every game all season, that’s going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team.
“Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can’t. Come on Arteta, make him captain.”
His comments sparked fury and now, one month later, Odegaard has revealed that his comments does not phase him and that it is important to phase such comments out especially when he has the backing of manager Mikel Arteta.
“I don’t care that much,” he said. “Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion and say what they want. I live with that.
“You can’t care what everyone says, there will be a lot of positive and negative things that can affect me. It’s important to just block it out. I’ve done it my whole career.”
Arteta backs Odegaard
Odegaard was also backed up by Arteta last month in the wake of Adams’ comments, as he revealed that the whole squad had voted for him to remain as captain.
“I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday,” said Arteta. “And by a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, and which is the most clear sign that you can have.
“It’s how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win. So I think there’s no question about that.”
Odegaard had only been at Arsenal for one full season when he was given the armband, but has now made 201 appearances for the club. The midfielder, who is currently away with Norway, says the player vote was a "nice confirmation".
He added: "We voted for it. Ultimately, it was (Arteta’s) choice anyway. But it was a nice confirmation for me."
