The England international is in the form of his life at Bayern Munich, having netted 19 times in 11 games for the German side, as he continues to find the back of the net with ease on his search for more trophies.
The 32-year-old now has 104 goals in 107 matches with Bayern Munich since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, and it is hard to ignore his incredible form when looking towards next year’s Ballon d’Or.
Speaking to Sky, Matthaus believes Kane will be considered, but only if Bayern find success in Europe or if Kane lifts the World Cup next year.
“We’re talking about a snapshot in time, but when you look at Kane’s performances, you wonder why he only came 13th in the Ballon d’Or voting. If he continues like this, he might be able to win this trophy next year, but that will only be possible in conjunction with the team’s success.”
“Robert Lewandowski won the Champions League with FC Bayern in 2020 and was later named World Player of the Year, but the two aren’t comparable. Kane reinvented the centre-forward game, just as Manuel Neuer did with goalkeepers about a decade and a half ago.”
Kane also has 76 goals for England, after scoring twice against Latvia on Tuesday to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup. If the veteran striker can lift the World Cup or the Champions League trophy and continue his fine form, then he will certainly be among the favourites to win the award as the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001.
