Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has defended their form ahead of tomorrow's clash with Liverpool.

The Blues host Liverpool after victory over Benfica in the Champions League. However, they were beaten at Stamford Bridge days earlier by Brighton.

Asked about the team's progress, Maresca reasoned: "I think we started very, very well in terms of results and performance. The first four or five games and then the rest of the games we didn't get the points that we wanted, for sure, but we already analysed the reason why.

"Most of the games we didn't get the points were because of the red cards. Also the injury situation; we have eight players out. It's a mixed combination but we don't have any doubt that slowly we will be again where we need to be."

On those red cards, Mareca continued: "You have to analyse case for case. When it's a red card for bad intentions, or bad discipline, then it is different compared to Brighton or Man United red cards. It's a decision you have to take in one or two seconds. It's difficult. I don't see any discipline problem, even if we concede three or four red cards."

Preparing for Liverpool

Liverpool go to Chelsea after back-to-back defeats, but Maresca is wary of the Reds' new-look attack.

On how he plans to setup Chelsea's defence, the Italian said: "There is a vulnerability about any team in the world, not just Liverpool. But if a team wins every games, it is impossible to catch them.

"Now they lost one or two games that shows vulnerability. This is something for every team in the world. You can drop points against any team in the Premier League.

"Yes we played both games very good. We lost there and won at home. Every game is different. We are going to try and prepare the game in the best way possible. Even if they have dropped points, they have shown the reason why they won the Premier League."

Asked if it was a good time to face the Reds, Maresca was coy.

He said, "I don't think now it is better to play Liverpool. It is always a tough game, always a big team. The way they are doing this season is in any case, fantastic, especially after the Jota tragedy.

"I lived the exact same when I was a player 20 years ago, it is not easy for the players or manager. You have to be very strong. This is the reason why for me they are doing, not good, but better than good because dealing with a problem like this is not easy."

Badiashile form

Discussing his defensive options, Maresca admits he's happy being able to call on Benoit Badiashile, who is now fully fit.

He said, "Since I joined the club, every time I talk about Benoit, he is an important player. Unfortunately he has been injured a few times. Before the last injury, he was playing almost every game. Now he is back, it is good news for us, for the teammates and especially for him."

On Marc Guiu being so far absent, Maresca stated: "Marc is working well. This week, he has worked very, very good; much better compared to the first weeks he was back.

"He is back with a big club like Chelsea. Again, he is going to get minutes with us, no doubt. The development for a young player is not all about games, it is also about training. He is working with us."

Asked about Estevao Willian's best position, he continued: "We consider all of our players to give them minutes in all positions. Estevao reminds me a lot of Cole (Palmer) when Cole was with me in the U23s at City.

"Cole's path has been similar to Estevao's path in terms of starting wide as a winger and then slowly you can move inside. In the Premier League, if you want to play in the middle, you need to be physically prepared."

Enjoyable start

While Chelsea have struggled for consistency so far this season, Maresca insists he's enjoyed their start.

He explained, "Enjoyable. For sure, I would like all my players available because that would be better. It's normal. I'm not thinking to be the Chelsea manager and everything is always going to be in place. You need to adjust, you need to evolve."

Asked about what he will learn from facing Liverpool tomorrow, Maresca added: "I consider them the best team in England at the moment because they have shown that and they won the Premier League.

"We are improving and trying to solve problems. For sure, in the end, we will be there and close."
