The Mirror says United management are working on strengthening the midfield for next season with the aim of making two senior additions.
United currently have three top names on their shortlist: Sandro Tonali (Newcastle), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).
All three midfielders have youth on their side, but more significantly are all Premier League players.
United are now veering away from working the continental transfer market, particularly with the way Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have lifted their attack since arriving last summer.
Those midfielders targeted will arrive to complement Kobbie Mainoo, who is now on the brink of signing a new contract at United.
