The Argentina international has been out since February after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Crystal Palace. However, as revealed by the club, he is back in training ahead of the club’s clash with Nottingham Forest this weekend.
It was feared Martinez might miss a year of football after such an injury, but he has now returned to the grass, as stated by the club on Thursday afternoon.
“There was a welcome sight at Carrington on Wednesday, as Lisandro Martinez returned to training with the rest of the first-team squad.
“Licha soon underwent surgery and has been putting in the hard yards over the last few months at Carrington, as part of his rehabilitation programme.
“That gradual process has now reached a significant step, with Martinez able to join the group again out on the grass.
“The return of the popular centre-back will no doubt provide a boost for Ruben Amorim, although the process will continue to be managed carefully.”
The Red Devils will be aiming to make it four straight wins in the Premier League when they head to the City Ground on Saturday afternoon to take on Forest. Martinez is unlikely to start, but could feature off the bench as Amorim’s defence sees a welcome face return.
