Jordan Henderson insists signing for Brentford wasn't about earning a place in England's World Cup squad.

It's been claimed Henderson left Ajax over the summer for a Premier League return in order to play in front of England coach Thomas Tuchel ahead of next year's World Cup.

But he told Brentford's website: “If I’m playing games, staying fit, and doing the best I can here, then hopefully I’ll have a chance of being in the World Cup squad next summer.

“But that’s why we were so successful under him and we won everything that we won.

“But I don’t think it mattered where I was playing, to be honest, because I was playing for England when I was at Ajax.”

On what success with Brentford would look like, Henderson added, “Improvement. For the club, for the team - I want to be a part of that - and for myself.

“I want to give everything for the team and, hopefully, by the time I leave, Brentford are in a better place.

“Everyone is so open, down-to-earth and genuine. It makes you realise why the team has done so well over the past few years with the people that they have in the building.

“It’s now about trying to build on that, especially with some of the changes over the summer. If we keep working hard and doing what the club has been doing over the last few years - whilst adding a few things to try and improve - hopefully we’ll keep going in the same direction.”
