Signed for a fee risiing to £80m from VfB Stuttgart, Woltemade has seven goals in 16 appearances already for Newcastle.
Asked if this was just a flash-in-a-pan, Hamann told Tribalfootball.com: “Obviously, Niklas Fullkrug has been out. He's been the number one striker (for Germany) in the last couple of years. He's been out for pretty much 12 months now. Obviously, he needs to go somewhere where he's playing to make a claim for a World Cup spot.
“Tim Kleindienst played there. He's come from Heidenheim. He's a decent player, a worker. But Woltemade, I think he's got all the tools because I think it's very awkward to play against him with his height. I think he's decent in the air.
“You'd say he should be for his height, but sometimes these tall players like Crouchie (Peter Crouch) couldn't head a ball to save his life at times and I played with him for a couple of seasons.
“Woltemade has got a great touch, good vision, links up well, and I think he fits in perfectly because they've got a very good team as we've seen in the weekend for Newcastle and obviously for the national team, he's got important goals as well.
“Not too many people expected it. A huge transfer fee, a lot of responsibility and also pressure, he takes it in his stride. He's a very calm young man. So it's just great to see.
“Will he score 25, 30 goals a season? Maybe not. But I think also what he does off the ball, when he gets assists, when he links up, that's why I think it's so important for Newcastle and for Germany.”
