The 6ft 6in German international has 4 goals in 8 Premier League appearances so far under Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. Woltemade has been impressive so far, already becoming a cult hero in the North East of England.
Woltemade is stronger than he looks
Despite his goals and impact so far, Woltemade has opened up to ESPN about his lack of strength on the pitch so far, even though he towers above most defenders. He spoke on one sport that he says has helped him gather the strength needed to succeed.
"Handball is really popular in Germany, after soccer, it is the most famous sport there is. I went to handball school in the morning and in the evening I had soccer.
"My body may not look strong, but sometimes I can push guys away. I have a good feeling in my upper body too because of handball. The coordination with my hands and feet helps me in football."
His Price tag is irrelevant
On the big-money price tag, Woltemade added that the fee involved does not impact him on the pitch, as he compares the Premier League to the Bundesliga.
“I was confronted with it frequently. But I didn’t choose this situation. I’m the least responsible for the sums involved. Nevertheless, I was happy that Newcastle saw enough potential in me to pay that amount.
“For me personally, it makes no difference whether I go from Werder Bremen to Stuttgart on a free transfer or from Stuttgart to Newcastle for €75million. Even though I know that the fee means a few more pairs of eyes are on me.
“Although, in England, the issue of transfer fees is viewed much more calmly than in Germany. Within the team, the transfer fee isn’t a factor at all.”
