Former referee Mark Clattenburg has stated that the crowding of the goalkeeper must be punished.

Arsenal have found success by scoring 26 goals from set pieces under manager Mikel Arteta this season which is by far the highest in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

The Gunners were beaten 3-2 at home by Manchester United at the weekend, but, did score from a corner after chaos in the box as the Arsenal players swarmed goalkeeper Senne Lammens

Despite the club’s success from set pieces, many believe that their tactics should not be allowed. Clattenburg says the Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited should not tolerate such tactics.

"It's clear that this has become more common when set-piece coaches were employed by clubs to get any advantage possible.

"It's something the PGMOL and Premier League need to address, and any blocking on the goalkeeper must be punished by a free-kick." Yes, more fouls will be given initially, but when teams realise they won't be allowed to use this tactic, they'll stop.

"We see this tactic used less in the Champions League as referees punish more!"

After beating Arsenal, United star Amad Diallo suggested that corners were the “only hope” for the club who, if their tactics are punished in the future, may find themselves in serious trouble after relying on the tactic so much.
