In the meantime, Lewandowski has spoken with Chicago Fire officials about a move to the USA next year and BBC Sport says the talks have progressed positively.
The Fire have Lewandowski on their 'discovery list', meaning no other club in the league can sign him without paying a fee to them.
The 37 year-old could still re-sign with Barca, while there is also interest from the Saudi Pro League. However, Chicago Fire chiefs are now bullish about their chances of signing Lewandowski for next season.
