Real Madrid and Barcelona are both following the youngster, who has admitted growing up following the career of Blaugrana legend Andres Iniesta.
Now Smit, 19, has opened up about a potential move to Spain this summer.
"It's a possibility, but I don't think it will be. I understand why the question comes up, given the sums mentioned. They are very high, and I agree with that. We'll see how it develops," Smit told Ziggo Sport.
At the same time, he is clear about what weighs most before the next step in his career.
"Above all, I want to get a lot of playing time, it is most important to me. I don't yet know what the next step will be, but once I've decided, I'll tell you," he added.
Smit's deal with AZ runs to 2029.
