Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi insists Real Madrid do not need him.

Zubimendi came close to joining both Real Madrid and Barcelona while with Real Sociedad before leaving last summer for the Gunners.

When asked if he thinks they need him at the Santiago Bernabéu , his answer is clear.

"I don't think so. Real Madrid has more than enough players to do well , so no, not at all..." he replied last night on El Larguero after Arsenal defeated Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semifinal second-leg last night.

Zubimendi also addressed another issue that concerns Spanish fans: the injury of Mikel Merino, his Arsenal teammate, a problem that could even affect his chances of playing in next summer's World Cup.

"He's in pain. He's a very professional person who takes care of himself and always thinks about what's best for the club. I know he's the one who's most hurt, but the damage his injury has done to the club is significant," Zubimendi said, referring to Merino's foot injury.

"Look, he seems fine, but when everyone gets home... I understand it's harder than it looks. I know he'll do everything possible to make it (to the national team), and if he doesn't, it'll be a real shame. We'll see what happens."

On finishing top of the Champions League table after the group phase, Zubimendi says Arsenal's ambitions stretch further.

He said, "It's about winning it. Qualifying is great, but we'll see who wins it. It's true that the adaptation to the league has been good, but I've noticed that the matches are very demanding, that everyone puts you under pressure, and that the level is very high.

"You should never count out Spanish teams. Barcelona reached the semifinals last year, Real Madrid is Real Madrid, and Atlético has plenty of quality players. I don't know, the Champions League is different, and anything can happen."
