Florian Wirtz was the subject of boos from Northern Ireland fans during Germany's 1-0 win in Belfast on Monday night, and he had now responded.

The 22-year-old, who Liverpool signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m in the summer, has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and is yet to grab a goal or an assist since the Community Shield.

Germany scraped a 1-0 win through Nick Woltemade’s first-half strike but underperformed on the night as they inch closer to the World Cup next year.

Wirtz was booed by the home supporters at Windsor Park after many believed he dived to try to gain a penalty for Germany, a move that many believe sums up his dire campaign so far. He was subjected to jeer each time he got on the ball throughout the rest of the game, as he quickly became an unpopular figure.

He has since responded on social media, with a brief comment after the national side picked up maximum points over the international break: "Successful international break."

Germany remain top of Group A with nine points from four games, and only goal difference separates them from Slovenia in second place, who are hot on their heels.

Wirtz is set to return for The Reds this weekend as Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield. If he can grab a goal contribution, then he may be able to turn his form around and prove many doubters wrong.
