A dire Premier League start has brought one point from two matches as United turn attention to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie at League Two Grimsby, where Amorim has revealed that he will be rotating his side to keep fitness levels up.
“Yes. Yes, we have three games this week, we have quality players, and we need to do rotation to try to win every game.”
In the same press conference, questions for Amorim switched to last season and how United were not prepared to challenge for a European competition after his side were narrowly beaten by Tottenham in Bilbao.
“It’s a normal thing that happens in other clubs. I think we were not prepared to play Europe; that is my feeling, to have strong games in the Champions League and then play Premier League. We need time to develop as a team.
“So, they just need to fight for the places, and then everything can change. Sometimes one is playing, in other moments, other guys are going to play, and we have the cups, so we’re going to have a lot of games for everybody.”
Amorim was also asked whether he is glad that he has got a bit more time to work with the team this time around and prepare for each game as they come.
“Yeah, I said that last season. We need time to prepare every game. The games are really competitive, and we need time to build a base, and then, in the future, to move forward. And we’ll reach one moment where we need to have Europe for everybody to play games.”
Despite investing £200M into signing the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, no United player has scored this season even with Amorim having more time with the side. Grimsby looks like an easy game on paper for United and could well be how they kickstart the season even if Amorim will heavily rotate the squad.
