City snapped up Guehi for £20M in the winter window as they fended off interest from Liverpool, who nearly lured in the defender in the summer before the deal was called off by the Crystal Palace board.
Guehi has since started twice for Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League and has already kept a clean sheet against Wolves. However, he will not this week’s EFL Cup clash with Newcastle, in what is a blow for the Spanish head coach.
As reported by Chronicle Live, Guehi was signed after the first leg match between Newcastle and Manchester City and is therefore ineligible to feature in the second leg.
EFL rules state: “A Registered Player shall be permitted to play for up to two clubs in the competition in any one season where such player moved to a different club on a permanent transfer prior to the closure of the Winter Transfer Window, or the first leg of the semi-final (whichever is sooner).”
As Guehi moved after the first-leg of the semi-final, he is then ineligible to feature for City in the competition this season.
In the absence of Guehi, Guardiola will have to decide whether to start Max Alleyne or Nathan Ake at centre-back alongside Abdukodir Khusanov in what is a shaky defence.
