The Germany goalkeeper has been regarded as third-choice behind Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny and management still are urging him to find a new club in January.
But Ter Stegen was back for last night's 2-0 win and Flick explained afterwards: "He has been at the club for around 12 years and now he is back.
"We talked and gave him a chance to show that he's back, and I think it was a good step for him."
