Dele Alli is currently without a club after having his contract with Serie A side Como cancelled and things have gone from bad to worse as Wrexham close their door.

After being let go by Everton in 2024, Alli found himself at Como under manager Cesc Fabregas who deemed him to be surplus to requirements this summer despite his ambitions to feature for England at next year’s World Cup.

The former Tottenham midfielder had been linked with Hollywood owned Wrexham, who have forged their way into the Championship this season as reports stated that manager Phil Parkinson was interested in snapping him up.

The Welsh side announced last week that one space is available on their 25-man squad list, but Parkinson has now revealed that Ollie Rathbone is expected to fill that position.

"I think Ollie is closing in. I just wanted to make sure Ollie got through this week in training and the signs are looking positive, and he'll be back in a couple of weeks. We need Ollie back, he's a key player for us. He was instrumental for us last year.

"He's a player who has played in the Championship; first year did well, second one was a difficult one at Rotherham because they had a very weak squad. But he's played at this level and when he signed for us, he was determined to get back into the Championship.

"His start to the season has been curtailed but obviously he's a very naturally fit player and the sooner we get him back involved in football, the better. His energy and his quality, I can't wait to get Ollie back out with us."

Wrexham are currently 15th in the table after a mixed start to life in the Championship. What is clear is Parkinson feels that Dele, capped 37 times for England, would not help his side improve into a club that can fight for promotion. What happens next for Alli is unknown but what is certain is that his England dream may be over.
