Southampton and England goalkeeper Ramsdale said he left Arsenal because he did not "want to win trophies if I was sitting on the bench” under Arteta who was open to letting him leave to join Southampton.
Arsenal won the Premier League for the first time in 22 years this season and will play against PSG in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday, May 30th as they chase down the double.
The sale of Ramsdale was controversial and as Arteta brings success to North London, Mamdani admitted this week that he was never 100% sure on the Spaniard who has more than proven he's the right man for the job.
“One of the things I think about with Arteta is that I was initially sceptical — I was even opposed — to the idea of moving (Aaron) Ramsdale out as our starting keeper.
"I loved Ramsdale. So many fans did. He was a fan favourite, he was good, and the ruthlessness required to sign (David) Raya, and then bring him into that starting position when it wasn't a crisis — to me, that is also the marker of someone who is unsatisfied with competing and wants to win… I've thought about it often.
“If your ambition is to go beyond, then this is also the kind of decision that you have to be willing to make.”
Ramsdale’s replacement Raya banked 19 clean sheets in 37 appearances for Arsenal this season, winning his third successive Golden Glove as he continues to prove to be the perfect player to step in for the England international.
