Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted that he is not feeling 100% after the loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

While Liverpool had dominated the French champions for the majority of the clash, they were unable to reduce the two-goal deficit they faced from the first leg.

Manager Arne Slot and his side are now left trophyless this season as their European hopes fizzled out once more under the Dutchman who has come under fire for the club’s poor performances in recent months.

Now, with The Reds set to face Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday afternoon on the hunt for a Champions League finish, Van Dijk has revealed that his head may not be in the right place.

"That’s the bare minimum (the team’s effort), isn’t it? It’s disappointing to be knocked out but PSG deserved to go through. Knocking on the door is not enough. I’m disappointed that we were knocked out, but that is the reality. I think PSG deserved to go through based on the two games.

"We should be very disappointed at this stage," he said. "But a massive game awaits for us.

“We all know how big it is. It will obviously be a tough one, but it is something to look forward to. But at this stage, I’m just not in a good place because we got knocked out of the Champions League."

Securing Champions League income for next season would help provide some of the funds to buy top players ready for next season.

As Van Dijk and the side mourn their European run, focus must turn to the Everton clash and picking up a vital three points as the likes of Chelsea and Brentford are hot on their heels.
