Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has spoken on Arsenal and their trophy hopes under manager Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners sit fourth in the overall table on goal difference, level on points with holders Paris Saint-Germain after their win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, with a Viktor Gyokeres brace rounding off a fine performance.

Arsenal have never won the Champions League and have not won the Premier League for over twenty years. Pressure is on Arteta to lift a trophy as fans cry out for silverware. However, speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy believes that the pressure is off and a trophy is not necessary.

"Yes, I do now. I think they win the Premier League. In the Champions League… PSG, when everyone is fit, they’re on a different level.

"But I don’t agree that Mikel Arteta has to win something. If you get 98 points and lose the title on the final day or lose the Champions League final in extra-time because of a bad refereeing decision, you’re not going to get rid of the manager, are you? That would be ridiculous.

"So I don’t think he has to win something, but he would have to be damn unlucky and be competitive right until the end in both competitions to be forgiven."

The FA Cup remains the only trophy Arteta has won in his near-six-year stint in charge of Arsenal and as investment grows in the squad, so does the pressure to win more trophies that have eluded the Spaniard. Arteta has a world-class squad this season, and many believe he may finally break his duck as his side continues to win each week.
