The Red Devils have failed to win at St James' Park since October 2020 and have lost the last 3 clashes away from home as they aim to repair that statistic this week.

Carrick is focused on the present

Carrick first spoke on United’s fine form and the possibility of qualifying for the Champions League this season which is the club’s ultimate goal after being knocked out of both domestic cups.

“Football is a tough game to get results. I learn, always learning as you go through, do things different. There is a lot of context, the group of players. It is about living in the moment, keep grounded and not getting carried away. You have got to feed off the confidence. We are hungry for more. Stay consistent.

On Champions League qualification: “Not looking too far ahead in terms of the games. We stay present and keep our minds on the job. I have been there many times and it is a difficult place to go. We understand where we are at. It doesn't mean we can talk about ifs and buts.”

Arsenal's corner tactics are a problem

Set pieces have the centre of attention for a number of months now with top manager such as Arne Slot and Pep Guardiola weighing in on Arsenal whose corner routines have been widely successful but bashed by fans. Carrick says such tactics are ruining the game which now feels unbalanced.

"I think it has gone too far, it wasn't too long ago you could not put a hand on anyone. It has crept in.

"Putting so many bodies in together has made more teams do it. As a game it doesn't feel we have got the balance right. In the meantime you have to deal what is in front of you.
