Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has told Steven Gerrard to prepare for a call back to Liverpool.

The Reds' 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday has helped manager Arne Slot stay in the job for now despite Liverpool’s poor start to their campaign, which sees them out of the title race and struggling in the Champions League.

Many candidates have been discussed as a replacement for Slot, including Gerrard, who has been out of a job since leaving Al Ettifaq in January after turning down the Rangers role last month.

Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, Ferdinand suggests that Gerrard should expect a call even if it is on an interim basis.

“I was sitting there saying to him (Gerrard) over some food the other day, ‘Listen, you need to sharpen your tools, mate.

“Sharpen the tools and get them ready because you could be going back in as interim boss.’ That’s what I was thinking.

“There was so many games coming up, I was just thinking I don’t see Slot getting through all of these games in good enough condition. And I think the pressure from the terraces and the fanbase might be too much and they might make a decision.

“In that climate someone like Steven Gerrard sitting there, a legend of the club, forget his tenures at different clubs. A legend at the football club ready to come in and steady the ship for them.

“I wouldn’t have been surprised if Steven Gerrard would have gotten a call.”

The win over the Hammers helped Liverpool move up to eighth in the  table and narrow the gap on the top four to just three points. For now, Slot is safe but if results do not continue improving he may be swapped out for Gerrard, who would not say no to a return.
