Earlier this week, Rooney rubbished comparisons between the current Arsenal team and Manchester United's Champions League and Premier League double-winning team from 2007-08.
At the time, United became the first club to win both the Premier League and Champions League in their modern formats under manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Arsenal are yet to win a trophy this season and Carragher, writing in his column for The Telegraph, reveals that the side could be compared to one of the best English teams of all time.
"I recently watched a documentary about United’s treble, and what stood out was that few believed winning the three major trophies was possible halfway through that campaign.
“Arsenal are in a far stronger position right now – and have fewer obstacles in their way – than United in January 1999.”
“We’d batter them,” replied the former United striker Wayne Rooney on Amazon Prime Video Sport UK when asked how a clash between the two sides would go. Carragher put this comments down to a "wind-up" as he continued.
"Player-for-player, Rooney’s peak United team – of which current coach Michael Carrick was a central figure – are superior to the Arsenal of 2026. If asked to pick a winner, United would get my vote.
“They have different qualities, one packed with attacking talent, while the other is built on one of the most resolute defences of the past 10 years. Wherever you stand on who would emerge victorious, it would be a close, intense battle."
A Premier League title this season would not be enough for Arsenal to be compared with United but winning the Champions League alongside it could cement them in the history books alongside that United side.
