Former England manager Sam Allardyce has told Harry Maguire that he would have taken the criticism from manager Thomas Tuchel more harshly.

Tuchel believes Harry Maguire is still his fifth-choice centre-back as he named Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones and Trevoh Chalobah ahead of the Manchester United star earlier this week.

Maguire was man-of-the-match during Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay and wore the captain's armband in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Japan on Tuesday night in the absence of Harry Kane.

The 33-year-old centre-back's current deal at Old Trafford is set to expire this summer and this summer may be his final tournament for the Three Lions in what will be an emotional farewell.

Allardyce, who has backed Maguire, suggested that Tuchel’s comments were tough to take and if it were him he may think about rejecting the German coach’s call up.

"He's been a model professional as far as I'm concerned," Allardyce said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast..

"He's taken every criticism on the chin and he's proving everybody wrong at the moment. So, that's harsh criticism, but I wonder whether I'd even want to go in his (Tuchel's) squad if he said that about me."

"I'd say, 'I'm 33, maybe I'll make a decision, it's okay'... If you look at your career, you've had your international time, we all start declining, however fit we keep ourselves after 30... when you see the end coming, there's nothing worse."

Maguire has found himself playing more since the return of Michael Carrick to United as he chases down Champions League football. Whether Tuchel will choose him is yet to seen and whether Maguire will answer the call is unknown.
